Awning Maintenance Tips

Once you have installed a beautiful retractable awning, you want to make sure that it looks its best for years to come. To do this, you need to perform simple awning maintenance. In addition to any repairs, it is very important to clean your vinyl awning. Keep reading to read about awning maintenance tips from the awning experts at Carter Fence.

Awning Care

The acrylic fabric of your awning is not designed to support the load of water pooling on the fabric so when you know it is going to rain it is best to retract your awning. It is the easiest way to keep it clean and damage free. If you happen to leave the awning out in the rain, don’t worry, just remember to let it dry out in the sun after the storms have passed. Retracting a wet awning can result in mildew that will damage your awning fabric.

Cleaning Your Awning

Along with regular care for your awning, it is important to give your awning a good cleaning once or twice a year. Use these steps when cleaning your awning:

  1. Brush off loose dirt
  2. Hose down the entire awning surface using a garden hose—do NOT use a power washer
  3. Use a mild soap to brush and scrub the surface
  4. Allow the cleaning solution to soak into the fabric
  5. Take extra care in removing stains
  6. Rinse thoroughly
  7. Let it air dry
